Bio

Honnête Bas is an Ethiopian multi-disciplined artist, born in Jerusalem, Israel. She and her family relocated to Brooklyn, New York when she was 9 years old. Following the move to Brooklyn, Bas spent three years in the Midwest, where she created a variety of mixed media work, while gaining her taste in mediums and practice—a meditative process. She later relocated to Los Angeles, CA to work as a Global Retail Operations Coordinator at American Apparel, but shortly after, the company dissolved. In 2017, she invested in having her first solo exhibition, ‘CLEAN VERSION,’ speaking to the power of womanhood, sexuality, and the double standard of the female body. Since then, her pieces shown at group shows in 2018 and 2019 have been byproducts of this measure. She welcomed the new year with her first performance art piece, [ 121 ], which showed at The Artery Los Angeles. Since its release, she has taken a break from traveling between the three hubs she calls home and is grounded with family in the Midwest, as she prepares to create new, singular abstract pieces, as well as storytelling visual art.

  ARTIST STATEMENT

These pieces are moments of my emotional metamorphosis. They are parallel to the duality of complex as a being.

Symbolizing relativity, I favor black and white. Red was a detrimental color in my upbringing. I was told that I wasn't to wear the color, it was frowned upon. I began to challenge myself to create with it. Blue showed itself to me as the power source in pulsating the flow of communication.

In my flow I welcome darkness, it allows me to see light. There is something intoxicating about the cycle of a balance. I believe that rebirthing the color red, changed my perspective. Flowing through colors and their relationships is my form of color therapy. This allows me to reflect and rise above what I was taught
